Maya flopped down on the bed with her back to Grace. “Can you tell this girl is a tiny bit dog crazy?”

“What a great room!” Grace said. “I love it!” Then she made a face. “Oh, my mom told me to call when we got here. Can you show me where the phone is, Kat?”

“Sure. It’s in our den.” Kat took Grace down the hall and into the den and then returned to her room. She sat down and stared at Maya. “Listen, Maya,” she said, “when we started our walk with Murphy, you mentioned the Puppy Collection. In front of Grace. But she doesn’t really know about it yet.”

“So?” Maya said. She rolled over onto her back. She plumped Kat’s pillow under her head.

Kat hesitated. Maya wasn’t making this easy. “So, I want to tell her about it. I want her to help us with it.”

Maya didn’t say anything.

“What do you think? She loves puppies too. If she’s going to be our friend, we should ask her to help us with our Puppy Collection,” said Kat. There. She’d said it. She held her breath.

Maya frowned.

“Remember when you first met Grace? You didn’t like her right away. Now, apparently, you do. Well, it’s a lot to expect that I’ll like her right away too. Besides, just because I said I’d try to be her friend, it doesn’t mean she has to do everything with us.” Maya sat up on the bed. “You asked me to help you at Tails Up! Then you asked her. Fine. You and I came up with the idea for the Puppy Collection. And now you want her to help with it too.” Maya crossed her arms. “Well, maybe I don’t want her to know about it.”

The girls stared at each other in silence.

Grace came back into the room. Her face was stony. Her fists were clenched. She didn’t look at Kat or Maya. “I have to go,” she said in a low voice.

Kat jumped up. Oh no. Grace must have heard them talking. “But…”

“My mom changed her mind,” Grace continued. “She wants me home for dinner.”

Kat was sure they had hurt her feelings. “Grace…”

“I’m sorry, Kat,” Grace said. Her eyes slid to Kat’s and then away. “Maybe I can come another day.”

“Grace, is that really true?” asked Kat. “Did your mom—”

Maya interrupted. “That’s too bad,” she told Grace. “See you tomorrow at school.”

“Yeah. See you,” Grace replied. “Bye, Kat,” she added, and she left the bedroom, closing the door behind her.
